Project Overview
Milton Mouse Children’s Ward is a dedicated children’s ward caring for young patients undergoing critical treatment. The objective of the refurbishment was to enhance the patient experience through the creation of a supportive, welcoming, and uplifting environment tailored to the needs of children and their families.
The Challenge
The lighting installation was designed to achieve compliance with LG2 recommendations for illuminance levels within patient care environments. Careful consideration was given to both regulatory compliance and the creation of a comfortable, patient-focused environment. To minimise disruption to the ward and ensure continuity of care, all works were meticulously planned and carried out outside of normal operating hours, allowing the ward to remain fully operational.
A key objective of the project was to create a more welcoming and reassuring environment for young patients undergoing treatment on the ward. The new lighting scheme was designed to provide a bright, comfortable, and visually engaging space, helping to reduce anxiety and create a calmer atmosphere for children and their families. By improving light quality, uniformity, and colour rendering, the refurbished environment feels more open and inviting, contributing to patient wellbeing and comfort during what can often be a challenging time. The enhanced lighting also supports staff in delivering high-quality care while ensuring the ward remains a positive and child-friendly setting that promotes a better overall patient experience.

Our Approach
Early planning with clinical & play leads to identify a suitable design for the area. This was followed by PM co-ordination with the manufacturer to achieve the desired result, along with validations of the ceiling style to ensure the panels & ceiling would work as a system.

Working in a live healthcare environment
To ensure the continuity of patient care and minimise disruption to daily ward activities, all installation works were carefully planned and scheduled outside of normal operating hours. This approach enabled the ward to remain fully operational, ensuring that patients, families, and clinical staff could continue their activities with minimal impact. Prior to the commencement of works, the designated areas were thoroughly cleared and prepared to facilitate safe and efficient installation. This meticulous approach helped maintain a safe, compliant, and patient-focused environment whilst delivering the project efficiently and with minimal disruption.

Project Outcomes
A primary objective of the project was to enhance the overall patient experience by creating a brighter, more welcoming, and child-friendly environment within Milton Mouse Children’s Ward. Recognising that many patients spend extended periods on the ward while receiving critical treatment, the new lighting installation was designed to contribute positively to their comfort, wellbeing, and sense of security.
The upgraded lighting has transformed the ward into a more engaging and uplifting space, helping to reduce the clinical feel of the environment and create a warmer, more reassuring atmosphere for children and their families. Improved light levels and visual comfort support everyday activities such as reading, playing, and interacting with visitors, while also helping patients feel more relaxed during their stay.
In addition to benefiting patients, the enhanced environment improves the experience of parents, carers, and visitors, creating a more pleasant and supportive setting during what can often be a challenging time. By combining compliance with healthcare lighting standards and a focus on user wellbeing, the project has helped deliver a positive, patient centred environment that supports both care delivery and the overall hospital experience
