Overview
C&B Electrical Contractors were appointed to deliver the full electrical fit-out for Theatre 4 at Milton Keynes University Hospital. The project was undertaken within a critical clinical environment, with an obstetrics operating theatre remaining fully operational adjacent to the works. The purpose of the project was to upgrade and install resilient, compliant electrical infrastructure to support modern surgical and clinical requirements within the theatre.
Objectives & Requirements
- Deliver a fully compliant electrical installation suitable for a hospital operating theatre. Install resilient power systems to support critical medical equipment.
- Ensure zero disruption to adjacent live clinical areas.
- Complete works in accordance with BS 7671 and NHS healthcare standards.
- Provide reliable power, lighting, and control systems for Theatre 4.
C&B Electrical Contractors implemented a carefully phased programme of works, developed in close collaboration with the hospital estates team. Detailed method statements and risk assessments were prepared to manage clinical risks. Works were scheduled to minimise disruption and conducted under strict permit-to-work and infection control procedures.
Installation Works Completed
- Installation of 2 no. new UPS distribution boards (UPS DBs).
- Installation of 1 no. General Power distribution board.
- Installation of a new Isolated Power Supply (IPS) system serving Theatre 4.
- Installation of small power and lighting throughout the operating theatre.
- Installation of control cabling to serve the theatre control panel.
Working in a Live Healthcare Environment
All works were carried out while an adjacent obstetrics theatre remained in use. Strict segregation of works areas, noise control measures, and continuous communication with clinical staff ensured patient safety and uninterrupted medical services throughout the project duration.
Technical Solutions & Equipment Used
HTM compliant UPS distribution boards to support critical loads, compliant to IP2X with the cover removed. Cabling (Power & Control) installed & terminated within the Bender IPS Cabinet. High-quality containment systems and all cabling LSOH. Equipotential bonding installed throughout the group 2 medical location.
Testing, Commissioning & Compliance
Comprehensive inspection, testing, and commissioning were completed upon installation. All systems were tested and certified in accordance with BS 7671, NHS electrical guidance (HTMs), and including testing of the equipotential bonding arrangment.
