Sometimes, the smallest changes to a hospital environment can make the biggest difference to how a child feels.
The unfamiliar surroundings, bright clinical spaces and waiting time can all add to the anxiety of being somewhere new. At Milton Mouse Children’s Outpatients Department, C&B Electrical Contractors Ltd wanted to help make that experience feel a little calmer, brighter and more reassuring.
In support of Milton Keynes University Hospital Charity, C&B Electrical fully funded and installed a bespoke under the sea themed lighting installation, designed to bring colour, comfort and a sense of escapism into the department.
The result is a welcoming underwater world filled with fish, coral reefs, an octopus and a yellow submarine. By bringing colour, imagination and a sense of discovery into the department, the panels help give young patients something calming and positive to focus on during their visit..
For C&B Electrical, this project reflects the human side of healthcare electrical services.
While safe, reliable and compliant electrical work is always essential in hospital environments, this installation shows how thoughtful design can also play a part in improving the patient experience.
As an experienced hospital electrical contractor, NHS electrical contractor and one of the best trusted Milton Keynes electrical contractors, C&B Electrical understands that working in live healthcare environments requires careful planning, sensitivity and a patient focused approach.
To minimise disruption, the work was carefully scheduled outside of critical ward opening hours. The panels were then seamlessly integrated into the department’s existing infrastructure, ensuring the installation could be completed safely while supporting the smooth operation of the clinical environment.
Every detail was considered, from the brightness and colour of the lighting to the positioning of the panels. The focus throughout was to create a calm, child friendly atmosphere that would positively support patient wellbeing.
Danny Reynolds, Electrical Supervisor at C&B Electrical Contractors Ltd, said:
“We wanted to create something that would make a real difference to children and their families during what can sometimes be a stressful experience. By bringing a little imagination and wonder into the hospital environment, we hope to help children feel more relaxed and comfortable during their visit, this is just one of the reasons that we enjoy this part of the job.”
Since the installation was completed, the new lighting has helped change the feel of the department in a simple but meaningful way. Instead of entering a purely clinical space, children are greeted by colour, movement and familiar underwater characters that give them something positive to focus on.
For staff, the installation provides another way to help settle young patients and create a more welcoming atmosphere during appointments and procedures. For families, it adds a sense of warmth to a setting that can otherwise feel unfamiliar or worrying.
The project also reflects C&B Electrical Contractors Ltd’s wider relationship with Milton Keynes University Hospital Charity. By donating both the materials and installation time, the team was able to deliver a lasting improvement to the department while allowing charitable funds to continue supporting other important projects across the hospital.
For C&B Electrical, this is exactly why community led healthcare projects matter. Technical skill can improve infrastructure, but thoughtful electrical design can also improve how a space feels for the people using it.
At Milton Mouse, the finished installation now offers young patients a small moment of comfort and curiosity during their hospital visit, helping to make the experience feel calmer, brighter and a little less daunting.
