Project Overview
Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) commissioned a large-scale lighting upgrade programme aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing maintenance requirements, and supporting the Trust’s sustainability objectives.
The project involved the replacement of over 4,000 existing light fittings with modern, energy-efficient LED alternatives across multiple departments and buildings throughout the hospital estate. The works were delivered within a fully operational healthcare environment, requiring careful coordination to ensure minimal disruption to patients, clinical teams, and hospital services.
The Challenge
Replacing over 4,000 light fittings within a live hospital presented several significant challenges. Many of the installation locations were within occupied wards, treatment areas, corridors, offices, and patient-facing spaces that remained operational throughout the project.

Our Approach
Our team worked closely with the hospital Estates Department, ward managers, and clinical personnel to develop a phased installation programme tailored around the needs of each department.
Detailed planning allowed works to be scheduled at suitable times, ensuring patient care always remained the priority. Installation teams maintained regular communication with ward staff to coordinate access and adapt working methods where required.

Installation Works Completed

Maintaining normal hospital operations was critical throughout the project. Works were carefully coordinated to minimise disruption within patient areas and ensure healthcare services could continue uninterrupted. Close communication with the IPC team was critical.
Our electricians worked closely with ward staff to schedule installations around clinical activities, patient requirements, and visiting times. Flexible working arrangements enabled us to complete areas efficiently while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff.
